RALEIGH, NC — The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles has launched a new online feature designed to save drivers time and reduce frustration by providing real-time wait times and capacity updates for driver license offices across the state.
Available now on the NCDMV Office Locations page, the tool gives customers a clearer picture of what to expect before leaving home. It includes estimated wait times and one of three status indicators for each office: accepting walk-ins and appointments, busy with longer waits expected, or at capacity with customers encouraged to try another location.
Governor Josh Stein said the new feature is aimed at improving convenience for residents. “The NCDMV is making it easier for North Carolinians to get the services they need on their own schedules,” Stein said. “Whether they’re renewing a license or getting a new ID, we want drivers to get on with their day as quickly as possible.”
The estimated wait times are presented as a range and are based on real-time data, including the number of service stations open, how many customers are being served or waiting, and average service durations. Officials note that wait times begin after a customer checks in and receives a ticket number and are calculated conservatively to help set realistic expectations.
“This new transparency tool is a significant step forward in improving the customer experience,” said Paul Tine. “By giving people the ability to check wait times and capacity before heading out, we’re helping them use their time more effectively and avoid unnecessary travel.”
The agency also emphasized that customers no longer need to arrive hours before offices open at 8 a.m. Walk-ins are accepted throughout the day until capacity is reached, and many locations are seeing shorter wait times in the afternoon — offering a more convenient option for those looking to avoid peak crowds.
The new system aims to address common frustrations, including unexpectedly long waits and offices reaching capacity without notice. By offering real-time updates, customers can plan visits during less busy periods, consider alternative locations, or schedule appointments when available.
Officials caution that wait times are estimates and can vary depending on service type and demand at any given time.
