MOUNT OLIVE, NC—The University of Mount Olive has received a $215,000 scholarship award from the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation, Inc. for the upcoming academic year.
“This scholarship support not only eases financial burdens but also affirms the promise and potential of these young women,” said President Croom. “We are grateful for a partnership that continues to shape lives and futures.”
Since 2018, the Foundation has supported UMO financially, enabling scholarships that have benefited more than 105 female students. Twenty-five students are currently recognized as Lettie Pate Whitehead Scholars, representing North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida, and majoring in disciplines such as education, agribusiness, recreation and leisure studies, veterinary bioscience, psychology, and nursing.
In addition to celebrating the scholarship award, scholars recently gathered for a leadership development session titled Grounded in Purpose: Fruits of the Spirit and Leadership. During the program, students explored the legacy of Lettie Pate Whitehead and how she remained firmly grounded in purpose, creating a gift that continues to open doors through education.
The session also revisited the five pillars of the University’s Lettie Pate Whitehead programming: Leadership, Mentorship, Academic Success, Entrepreneurial Spirit, and Service. Each pillar reflects Mrs. Whitehead’s enduring vision and challenges scholars to lead with intention and integrity.
After reflecting on Galatians 5:22-23, the scholars participated in a creative activity designed to connect faith with personal growth. Each student painted a piece of fruit representing the Fruit of the Spirit she most hopes to strengthen in the coming months. The exercise encouraged thoughtful self-reflection while reinforcing the idea that leadership begins with character.
“As their advisor, I am continually inspired by the intentionality these scholars bring to their growth,” said Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Lettie Pate Whitehead Advisor Dr. Kimberly Bryant. “When our young women understand that leadership begins with character and purpose, they step confidently into spaces knowing they are called to both serve and lead.”
