GOLDSBORO, N.C. — United Way of Wayne County is continuing its mission to serve neighbors in need by building meaningful partnerships with local churches that have historically supported United Church Ministries (UCM).
As part of this ongoing transition, United Way is working closely with congregations that previously partnered with UCM and may not yet be participating in the UCAN program — the United Community Assistance Network. The goal is to ensure these churches remain connected to a coordinated system of support for individuals and families facing hardship.
A major milestone in this effort came on Sunday, March 1, when First Christian Church became the first church to begin supporting the UCAN program. The church welcomed United Way representatives to speak to its congregation about UCAN’s mission and impact, encouraging members to support the initiative throughout the month of March and continue the long-standing tradition of compassion and direct assistance once provided through UCM.
The UCAN program serves as a collaborative network that connects residents with essential resources, including housing support, utility assistance, food access, and other basic needs. Through partnership and shared stewardship, United Way aims to create a stronger, more unified safety net for the community.
“We are deeply grateful to First Christian Church for stepping forward,” said Sherry Archibald. “Their leadership honors the spirit and legacy of United Church Ministries while helping us build a stronger, more unified system of care through UCAN.”
United Way of Wayne County plans to continue outreach to churches across the area that were part of the UCM network, offering opportunities to engage in meaningful, mission-driven support. These efforts reflect a commitment to honoring the legacy of UCM while advancing a sustainable, collaborative model for community assistance.
Churches and community members interested in learning more about UCAN or partnering with United Way are encouraged to reach out to United Way of Wayne County.
Together, through faith, partnership, and action, the work of caring for neighbors in Wayne County continues.
