GOLDSBORO, N.C. — The Goldsboro Police Department is warning residents about a phone scam involving callers who falsely claim to be police officers and attempt to trick victims into sending money.
According to the department, individuals have been contacting residents while posing as employees of the police department, often calling from blocked numbers. During the calls, the suspects tell victims that a relative has been arrested and urgently needs money for bail.
Police say the callers frequently pressure victims to send money immediately, hoping the sense of urgency will prevent them from verifying the information.
Officials stressed that the Goldsboro Police Department will never request money over the phone to bail someone out of jail. They also emphasized that no legitimate law enforcement agency will ask for payment through digital payment services such as Cash App or other similar platforms.
Authorities are urging residents who receive a call like this to avoid sharing any personal or financial information. Instead, they should hang up immediately and contact the police department to report the incident.
Police also encourage residents to talk with family members about the scam, especially older adults or others who may be more vulnerable to fraudulent calls.
Anyone who believes they have been targeted by this scam is asked to contact the Goldsboro Police Department.
