MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — The University of Mount Olive women’s lacrosse team returned from a week-long break in strong fashion, defeating the Georgian Court Lions 13-9 in a balanced performance.
The Trojans and Lions battled closely in the opening quarter, with Mount Olive holding a narrow 3-2 lead after goals from Ava Mullen, Maddy Fratus, and Alexa Fitzgerald.
Mount Olive gained momentum in the second quarter, erupting for seven goals to build a comfortable advantage heading into the second half.
Fitzgerald led the offensive effort with four goals, recording a hat trick before halftime. She also contributed two assists, setting up scores by Fratus and Mullen, who each finished with two goals.
Additional goals for the Trojans came from Jazna Dumont with two, along with Morghan Pollock, Libby Berg, and Jordan Bolam, who each added one.
Mount Olive controlled several key statistical categories during the contest, leading 16-9 in shots on goal and 16-7 in draw controls. Katie Broom dominated the draw circle with 10 of the team’s 16 draw control wins. Giavahna Gasdia added three draw controls and five ground balls, while Simone McCraw caused three turnovers by interception and collected four ground balls.
Goalkeeper Ruby Burandt played all 60 minutes in net for the Trojans, recording six saves to help secure the victory.
Mount Olive will look to continue its momentum when the Trojans return to action on the road March 18 at 7 p.m. against conference opponent the Belmont Abbey Crusaders.
