GOLDSBORO, NC — Leaders at both the city and county levels are recognizing the historic contributions of women by proclaiming March as Women’s History Month.
During recent meetings, the Goldsboro City Council and the Wayne County Board of Commissioners issued proclamations honoring the achievements and influence of American women throughout the nation’s history.
In the proclamation, officials noted that American women of every race, class and ethnic background have made significant contributions to the growth and strength of the United States in both recorded and unrecorded ways. The document highlights the critical economic, cultural and social roles women have played in every sphere of national life.
Leaders emphasized that women have long formed a substantial portion of the labor force, contributing both inside and outside the home. They also recognized women’s longstanding role as the backbone of volunteerism across the country and their leadership in establishing many early charitable and cultural institutions.
The proclamation also acknowledged that women have served at the forefront of major social change movements throughout American history. Their leadership has been instrumental in movements advocating for equal rights, labor protections, civil rights and peace, helping to create a more fair and just society.
Additionally, officials recognized the courage and dedication of women who have served in the United States military.
Despite these contributions, the proclamation notes that the role of women in history has often been overlooked or undervalued in the teaching and study of American history.
By formally recognizing March as Women’s History Month, county and city leaders are encouraging residents throughout Wayne County to reflect on the accomplishments of women and to celebrate their impact on communities across the nation.
Officials called on citizens to observe the month by recognizing the achievements of women past and present and by supporting efforts that promote equality and opportunity for future generations.
