WILSON, NC — The University of Mount Olive women’s flag football team continued making history in its inaugural season Saturday, becoming the first team to score against undefeated Barton College despite falling 65–7 on the road.
The Trojans showed determination throughout the contest, breaking through in the third quarter to end the Bulldogs’ early-season shutout streak. Barton entered the game with momentum after a dominant 120–0 victory over Virginia Wesleyan University and had not allowed a single point this season before Saturday’s matchup.
Mount Olive’s lone touchdown came on a 9-play, 66-yard drive in the third quarter. Running back Maiya George capped the drive with a one-yard touchdown run to put the Trojans on the board.
George led the team in rushing, while Alivia Conticello paced the receiving corps. Quarterback Jaylianie Lucas delivered a strong performance through the air, completing 35 of 51 passes for 248 yards. Her longest completion of the game was a 31-yard pass to Conticello.
While the final score favored Barton, the Trojans’ ability to break through against the previously unscored-upon Bulldogs highlighted the growth and potential of the program as it navigates its first season.
Mount Olive will return to Wilson next weekend for a pair of conference matchups. The Trojans are scheduled to face Mount St. Mary’s University at 11 a.m. followed by a 3 p.m. game against Ferrum College on Saturday, March 14.
