February 27, 2026, 89, Kinston – With steadfast faith that her Savior would soon come to deliver her from this world of darkness into His kingdom of eternal light, Billie Lou Nichols Humphrey, 89, fell asleep in Jesus on February 27, 2026, with her loving family by her side. She now rests in the Lord, awaiting reunion with her loved ones on the glorious Resurrection morning. “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.”
Billie was born in Pitt County to the late Luther Benjamin Nichols and Tessie Manning Nichols. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Jack Mozingo; her second husband, James “Sonny” Humphrey; her son, Randall Humphrey; her grandchildren, Taylor Humphrey and Katlyn Humphrey; and her siblings, Theo Dell Waters and Luther Nichols.
Billie devoted 31 years of service to Lenoir County Government, retiring as Lenoir County tax administrator. Her organizational skills, both at work and at home, were exemplary. Known as a saint to her family, she was the one they sought for wise counsel. With her natural ability to delegate and keep everyone on track, she was lovingly regarded as the true matriarch of the family. She was an excellent cook and always enjoyed having her family over on holidays. She enjoyed spending time with her Bojangles friends every week.
Living a life firmly anchored in faith, Billie drew strength and comfort from her relationship with the Lord. Her life reflected the faith she professed. A longtime and devoted member of the Kinston Seventh-day Adventist Church, she served faithfully in many roles and was active in numerous ministries as long as her health permitted. For many years, she also volunteered with the Lenoir County Council on Aging, faithfully delivering Meals on Wheels to those in need, offering not only a warm meal but also a kind and comforting presence. Always placing others before herself, Billie was a gracious and steadfast friend to all who knew her.
Though her family loves her dearly and will miss her deeply, they rest in the blessed hope of being reunited with her on that bright Resurrection morning. Her loving heart and unwavering devotion to her family will be remembered and cherished always.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at the Greenville North SDA Church, 4658 Reedy Branch Road, Winterville, NC 28590.
Billie is survived by her children, Jackie Mozingo; Della Frederick (Don); and Wayland Humphrey (Beverly); her grandchildren, Benjamin Mozingo (Anna), Eddie Humphrey, Carly Humphrey, Beth Grant, and Leigh Grant; her sister, Sue Kite; and her faithful companion and beloved fur baby, Rusty.
