February 15, 2026, 78, Goldsboro – Billy Arthur Gooding, 78, passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center, surrounded by compassionate care.
Billy was born in Lenoir County on May 6, 1947, to the late Edna Gooding and William Arthur Hardison. A proud patriot, he faithfully served his country in the United States Navy, retiring after 24 years of honorable service. During his distinguished military career, Billy earned numerous awards and medals in recognition of his dedication and commitment.
Following his retirement from the Navy, Billy continued his strong work ethic in civilian life, serving the State of North Carolina and later working with Pate Dawson Company.
Those who knew Billy will remember his dedication to his country, his steady presence, and his devotion to his family.
Billy is survived by his daughter, Patricia Schutt and husband, Mitch; his grandsons, Chris Vandiford and wife, Cassie, Justin Vandiford, and Nathan Vandiford; his sister, Lou Ellen Odom; his nephews, David Michael Odom and Jeffrey Steven Odom; as well as many cousins he loved very much.
The family will receive friends on Friday, February 27, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at Seymour Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 12:00 p.m. at Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Billy’s memory to Wounded Warrior Project.
