February 16, 2026, 91, Mount Olive – At the close of day on Monday, February 16, 2026, like, as usual, Daniel Kornegay would tuck himself in for the night, except this time, he went to his eternal home to reunite with his beloved Lee, whom he had sorrowfully missed for a little more than four months. He went home peacefully while being cared for at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. After having lived a good, long life with plenty of hard work, he had grown tired and was ready for peaceful rest.
Mr. Kornegay, age 91, was a life-long resident of the Rones Chapel community near Mount Olive, having spent every day on the farm on which he was born and raised. Too, he was a life-long parishoner at Rones Chapel Methodist Church.
His family, friends, and the community will gather on Thursday, February 19, at 5:30 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home for a remembrance of his life, to be conducted by the Rev. Duane Haddock and Mr. Michael Odom, after which the family will receive friends. Committal rites with burial will be Friday, February 20, at 11:00 a.m. in Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Olive. Friends and relatives are also being received at the Kornegay residence. While flowers are welcome, any one desiring to make a memorial contribution are encouraged to consider Rones Chapel Church, 138 Garner’s Chapel Church Road, Mount Olive, NC 28365, or Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
Loved ones whom he loved dearly and leaves behind include his daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy K. and Rouse Ivey, and Diane K. and Allen Best, all of the Mount Olive area; four grandchildren, John Daniel Ivey and wife, Rebekah H. Ivey, and Abbie C. Ivey, all of the Mount Olive area, Steven Best of Raleigh, and Karen B. Painter and husband, Marlan Painter, of Mount Olive; six great-grandchildren, Cresson, Johnson, and Charlotte Ivey, Matthew and Nora Williams, and Olivia Painter, all of Mount Olive; three sisters, Maxine K. Butts, and Linda K. Herring, both of Mount Olive, and Sue K. Satcher of Clayton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In death, he now has reunited with his wife, Ruby Lee Jordan Kornegay; his parents, Morris D. and Elizabeth “Tom” Kornegay; and a brother, Robert Kornegay.
