WAYNE COUNTY, N.C. — A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Wayne County and portions of central North Carolina as mixed precipitation is expected to move through the region beginning this evening.
The advisory runs from 6 p.m. Wednesday through 10 a.m. Thursday, with forecasters calling for up to one inch of snow in some areas and light ice accumulations from freezing rain and drizzle.
According to weather officials, rain is expected to transition to light snow late this afternoon and evening, particularly across areas north of Interstate 85. Snow accumulations are expected to remain light, generally under one inch. In other locations, precipitation is forecast to change to a mix of light freezing rain and drizzle.
As temperatures fall rapidly below freezing overnight, road conditions are expected to deteriorate. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roadways are likely to become slick and hazardous, increasing the risk for travel difficulties during the overnight and early morning hours.
Drivers are urged to use caution, reduce speeds, and allow extra time for travel as conditions change.
