WAYNE COUNTY, N.C. — The Wayne County Board of Education recognized several students and staff members during its January 19 meeting, spotlighting achievements that reflect academic excellence, artistic talent, leadership, and professional dedication across Wayne County Public Schools.
Among those honored was Charles B. Aycock High School senior Elliott Carter, who was recently appointed to the North Carolina Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SSAC). Carter was selected from a competitive pool of more than 1,800 high school students statewide to serve as one of only 12 student advisors representing North Carolina’s eight education regions.
The two-year appointment allows council members to meet twice each month to discuss education issues impacting students across the state, advocate on behalf of their peers, and provide direct input to state education leaders and decision-makers.
The Board also recognized the musical achievements of Brogden Primary School fourth grader Alexis Thompson and Rosewood High School senior Nicholas Wade, who were selected to participate in the North Carolina Elementary and High School Honors Choruses. Sponsored by the North Carolina Music Educators Association, the 200-member choruses bring together talented elementary and high school vocalists from across the state to perform under the direction of nationally recognized conductors.
Both students spent several weeks preparing for the November performances, learning multiple musical selections independently and with guidance from their music teachers and choral instructors.
Fremont Elementary School Principal Sheila Wolfe was honored for her leadership after recently receiving the North Carolina SHAPE Distinguished Principal Award at a special ceremony in Winston-Salem. Presented by the North Carolina Alliance for Athletics, Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Dance, and Sport Management, the award recognizes exceptional dedication and leadership among more than 4,000 K–12 health and physical education professionals statewide. Wolfe was recognized for her commitment to developing an outstanding physical education program for students at Fremont Elementary.
In addition, the Board recognized WCPS Budget Specialist Latosha D. Cauthen for completing the North Carolina Association of School Business Officials School Business Management Academy Director Certification. The certification requires the completion of 36 rigorous courses covering accounting, financial management, legal responsibilities, and business office operations, demonstrating a strong commitment to excellence in school business administration.
The Wayne County Board of Education commended each honoree for their accomplishments and for positively representing Wayne County Public Schools at the state level.
