GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Habitat for Humanity of Goldsboro-Wayne is kicking off the new year with major momentum as construction officially begins on the organization’s largest project to date.
Vertical construction is now underway in the McNair Heights neighborhood, a 24-acre development that will ultimately bring dozens of new affordable homes to Wayne County families. Phase one of the project includes 25 Habitat homes and 31 single-family lots, following months of infrastructure work that included water, sewer, and road installation.
Habitat officials say three homes are currently under construction, with plans to move quickly as additional partner families progress through the program. More than a dozen future homeowners are already in the system, and interest from volunteers, churches, and local businesses has been strong.
“This is a transformational project—not just for these families, but for the entire community,” Matthew Whittle said on WGBR, noting that volunteers are now welcome to participate in the build. Those interested in helping can sign up, donate, or learn more at habitatgoldsboro.org.
The McNair Heights development marks a milestone year for Habitat for Humanity of Goldsboro-Wayne, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2026. Since its founding in 2001, the organization has built 106 homes across the county. Officials say McNair Heights alone will eventually match that number over the coming years.
To commemorate both the start of construction and the anniversary year, Habitat will host a wall-raising ceremony on Friday at noon at 1100 Dr. Aiken McNair Street, where the first walls of the new homes will be lifted into place.
In addition to construction progress, Habitat also shared updates on The ReStore, located at 124 E. Mulberry Street in downtown Goldsboro. The store recently added new bright blue awnings to freshen its appearance and provide shelter for customers during inclement weather. The ReStore continues to feature an ever-changing inventory, with proceeds supporting Habitat’s mission.
Community members are encouraged to visit the ReStore, volunteer on build sites, or support the organization online as Habitat enters a landmark year of growth and impact.
