WAYNE COUNTY, NC – The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about scam phone calls in which callers falsely claim to be law enforcement officials and demand money for an inmate’s release or for the placement of an ankle monitor.
According to the sheriff’s office, several reports have been received from individuals who were contacted by scammers requesting immediate payment, often creating a sense of urgency to pressure victims into sending money.
Officials emphasized that deputies and employees of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office will never request payment over the phone, nor will they instruct anyone to send money, wire funds, or purchase gift cards for any reason.
Residents who receive such calls are urged not to provide any personal or financial information. Instead, they should hang up immediately and report the incident to law enforcement.
The sheriff’s office encourages the public to remain vigilant and to share this information with family members and friends to help prevent others from becoming victims of the scam.
