RALEIGH, NC — Donald Godwin of Mount Olive is celebrating after taking a chance on a $10 Jumbo Bucks scratch-off ticket and winning a $1 million top prize.
Godwin purchased the winning ticket from the Minuteman Food Mart located on North Breazeale Avenue in Mount Olive.
When he arrived Wednesday to claim his prize, Godwin was presented with two payout options: an annuity of $50,000 per year over 20 years or a lump-sum payment of $600,000. He chose the lump-sum option and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, received $432,063.
The Jumbo Bucks scratch-off game debuted in August 2024 and originally featured eight $1 million top prizes. According to lottery officials, one $1 million prize remains unclaimed.
Officials also noted that Wayne County has benefited significantly from lottery proceeds. State grants totaling more than $28 million from lottery funds have helped support the construction of a new elementary school in the county. Additional information about how lottery funds impact Wayne County is available on the North Carolina Education Lottery website under the “Impact” section.
