GOLDSBORO, NC – Goldsboro native Dr. Raymond E. Smith Jr., a two-term legislator, U.S. Army combat veteran, and former public educator, formally launched his campaign Tuesday as a Democrat for North Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District.
Smith said his decision to run is rooted in a commitment to public service and advocacy for Eastern North Carolina communities.
“I’m running for Congress because I believe our communities deserve a representative who puts people first and fights for them every day in Washington,” Smith said. “I’ve spent my life serving North Carolina. Our challenges are not partisan—they are personal—and they deserve serious, focused leadership.”
Smith has a long record of service in North Carolina, including time in the U.S. Army, work as an educator and transportation leader, and service in the North Carolina General Assembly. During his tenure in the legislature, he represented communities across Eastern North Carolina and worked across party lines to advance legislation aimed at addressing local needs.
In his congressional campaign, Smith said he aims to prioritize people over political interests and continue his commitment to public service in Eastern North Carolina.
