December 27, 2025, 88, Mount Olive – After a period of declining health, Lois Hinson Brogden Grimes, a long-time resident of the Smith Chapel community and devoted member of Smith Chapel Methodist Church, passed peacefully from this life into her heavenly home. She was born on September 3, 1937, in Duplin County to the late Robert and Maggie Hinson.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Ralph Lee Brogden and Carroll Winston Grimes; her stepdaughter, Diane Grimes Odom; five brothers; and three sisters.
She is survived by her daughter, Vickie Lee and husband Hunter of Apex; her son, Stuart Brogden and wife Robin of Dudley; her stepdaughter, Carolyn Weeks Perry and husband John of Suttontown; numerous grandchildren, great‑grandchildren, a great‑great‑grandson, and many nieces and nephews.
A delivery truck accident in 1959 that ultimately took the life of her brother Buddy inspired Lois to pursue a career in nursing—a calling she fulfilled with compassion and dedication for 37 years. She worked alongside Dr. Drummond in the Grantham community for many years before continuing her service at Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro, where she retired in 1997.
In retirement, Lois embraced the things she loved most: gardening, traveling, volunteering in her community, sewing, and playing cards with her friends. Sewing was one of her greatest joys—whether she was piecing together quilts, hemming clothes for family, or creating handmade gifts that carried her care in every stitch. She took pride in her craftsmanship, and those who received her work treasured it not just for its beauty, but for the patience and skill she poured into it. Her steady presence, strong work ethic, and commitment to those around her will be remembered always.
A service to celebrate the life of Lois will be held on Wednesday, December 31, 2025 by the graveside at Wayne Memorial Park with Pastor Deborah Sutton officiating. The family will greet friends on Tuesday, December 30, 2025 from 7:00 until 9:00 pm at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Eagles Point, Kitty Askins, and the 3HC nurses for their compassionate caring during this difficult time.
