MOUNT OLIVE, NC — Firefighters from Mount Olive, Dudley, and Calypso responded to a reported structure fire on Kelly Street shortly after lunchtime on Christmas Day.
Several firefighters said they could see smoke rising above the treetops as they were en route to the scene. Upon arrival, first fire units encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the rear of the residence.
All occupants of the home were able to safely evacuate before firefighters arrived. Crews quickly went to work, using a nearby fire hydrant located across the street to supply water to the engine. Multiple attack lines were deployed, allowing firefighters to bring the fire under control in a short period of time.
Fire officials on scene said the cause of the fire remains undetermined and the incident is still under investigation.
Wayne County EMS stood by at the scene as a precaution, while the Mount Olive Police Department assisted with traffic control during firefighting operations.
