December 10, 2025, 68, Goldsboro – Robert Eugene “Gene” Reich, 68, a beloved fixture of downtown Goldsboro, passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2025 leaving behind a legacy of loyalty, hard work, and quiet humor that touched generations of friends and neighbors.
For many years, Gene worked at the Record Rack in downtown Goldsboro, where he became much more than an employee. There, he was lovingly “adopted” by the Hartley family and earned the affectionate nickname “Mean Gene” from his boss, Stanley Hartley—a name spoken always with fondness and a smile. The Record Rack was not just a workplace for Gene, but a second home, and the relationships he built there remained dear throughout his life.
After the Record Rack closed, Gene continued his downtown journey at the Family Shoe Store, where he worked for the Bedford family. Once again, Gene became more than an employee—he became family. His steady presence, reliability, and familiar face made him a constant and comforting part of the downtown community.
Gene was well known throughout Goldsboro, recognized by many simply because he was always there—working, greeting others, and being himself. Gene attended St. Paul Methodist Church, where he found spiritual comfort and community.
Gene was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan, proudly supporting his team through every season.
Gene will be remembered for his dedication, his gentle spirit, and the special place he held in the hearts of those who knew him. Downtown Goldsboro will not be the same without him, but his memory will live on through the many lives he quietly touched.
Gene is survived by his special friend, Jennifer Tufts and her sister, Natalie Young; his Record Rack family, the Hartley’s; his Family Shoe Store family, the Bedford’s; and his numerous beloved friends.
Gene was preceded in death by his mother, Louise Reich Bryan and his boss and friend, Stanley Hartley.
A service to celebrate Gene’s life will be held in early 2026 at St. Paul Methodist Church with Rev. James H. Harry officiating. The service date and time will be announced in the coming weeks.
