Wayne Community College Opens State-of-the-Art Cybersecurity Lab to Train Next Generation of Digital Defenders

GOLDSBORO, N.C. – Wayne Community College has launched a cutting-edge cybersecurity laboratory this fall, providing students with advanced training facilities designed to prepare them for careers protecting critical digital infrastructure.

$150,000 Grant Powers New Training Facility

The new lab was made possible through a nearly $150,000 grant awarded in 2024 by the Carolina Cyber Network, an organization connecting cybersecurity educators and students across North Carolina. Wayne Community College is a member of the network, which facilitates resource sharing and promotes best practices throughout the state’s cybersecurity education community.

The funding enabled the college to equip the facility with professional-grade resources that mirror real-world cybersecurity environments, giving students practical experience in ethical hacking, network monitoring, and critical defense strategies that are in high demand among employers.

Advanced Equipment Creates Real-World Learning Environment

The laboratory features a comprehensive array of modern technology, including new networking equipment, a mobile instructor workstation, smart boards, and video conferencing tools to enhance interactive teaching and collaboration. Ergonomic seating contributes to the professional atmosphere of the space.

The lab’s design includes two distinct sections—one dedicated to lectures and another for hands-on activities—allowing for seamless transitions between theoretical instruction and practical application.

Red Team vs. Blue Team Exercises Simulate Cyber Warfare

One of the lab’s key capabilities is supporting red team/blue team exercises, where students assume the roles of either attackers or defenders in simulated cybersecurity scenarios. These practical exercises allow students to experience both sides of the cybersecurity battle, developing crucial skills in both offense and defense.

“This lab bridges theory with practice, transforming classroom lessons into real-world skills,” said Jennifer Tyndall, Department Chair of Information Systems Technology at Wayne Community College. “It gives our students the competitive edge they need to stay ahead of today’s cyber threats and launch successful careers.”

Students Already Benefiting from Enhanced Resources

The facility is already in use this semester, with students in the Introduction to Networks class utilizing the new equipment to create and test cables using the lab’s networking equipment and servers.

“The new setup has increased student engagement, with several students staying after class to continue practicing and exploring concepts,” said Randy Wilhide, Cybersecurity Instructor at Wayne Community College.

Tyndall noted that faculty members are also enthusiastic about the new space. “Faculty are equally excited about the space, pointing out that the layout and technology make it easier to transition between lecture and hands-on activities,” she said.

National Recognition for Excellence

The new laboratory enhances an already distinguished program. Wayne Community College holds designation from the National Security Agency as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD), a recognition that highlights the program’s commitment to producing highly skilled cybersecurity professionals capable of protecting the nation’s digital infrastructure.

Educational Pathways and Transfer Opportunities

Wayne Community College’s Cybersecurity program offers an associate degree along with several certificate options. Graduates seeking further education can transfer to East Carolina University to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology.
