GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Wayne County veterans advocates Larry Edmonds and Wayne Alley recently announced two important upcoming events for the local veteran community.
Wayne County Stand Down: October 9
The Wayne County Stand Down will take place this Thursday, October 9, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Veteran Service Office (VSO) on Ash Street in Goldsboro. This year’s venue represents a strategic shift to make the event more accessible to those it serves.
The Stand Down is specifically designed to assist homeless and disadvantaged veterans, offering a range of essential services through approximately 14 to 15 participating vendors. Services available include medical evaluations, free haircuts, clothing, food, housing referrals, and connections to veteran services.
Organizers emphasize that this event is not open to all veterans, but rather focuses exclusively on those who are disadvantaged and meet specific qualification criteria. Veterans who are fully retired and drawing Social Security and VA benefits, for example, would not qualify for assistance.
Those wishing to participate must bring valid identification. According to Edmonds, veterans should bring “either a VA ID card, your DOD ID card, or your DD-214. If you’re homeless, have a letter from the shelter stating that you are homeless.” Participants will be evaluated upon arrival through a survey process to ensure they meet the eligibility requirements.
Veterans Day Parade: November 11
Looking ahead to next month, Wayne County will host its annual Veterans Day Parade on November 11 in downtown Goldsboro. The parade route will proceed down Center Street and return via North Center Street, with participants assembling at the intersection of Ash Street and Center Street.
Units interested in participating can register at no cost by visiting WayneGov.com, clicking on “Services,” and then selecting “Veterans Day Parade” to access the application. Completed applications should be returned to Denitra Shuford at the VSO.
Unlike many parade events that charge entry fees ranging from $25 to $50, Wayne County’s Veterans Day Parade offers completely free participation to any group wishing to join. Organizers request only that participants maintain a patriotic theme with their float or unit and display the American flag.
Residents should note that Center Street will be closed early on the morning of November 11 and will remain blocked off until the conclusion of the parade. Community members are encouraged to attend and support local veterans.
