GOLDSBORO, N.C. — High school students from Goldsboro got an up-close look at college life this weekend, thanks to a community initiative aimed at expanding educational horizons.
The Goldsboro Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. organized a college open house trip to Winston-Salem State University on Saturday, bringing together members of the Kappa League youth program and debutantes from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s local chapter.
The day-long campus visit gave students a comprehensive introduction to WSSU, one of North Carolina’s historically Black universities. Participants toured campus facilities, attended sessions on admissions procedures and financial aid options, and met with current students and faculty members.
Beyond academics, the visit included cultural experiences that showcased campus life, including a Greek step show, the university’s marching band performance, and a football game. A panel of Kappa Alpha Psi and Alpha Kappa Alpha alumni also spoke with students about navigating college successfully and developing leadership skills.
“This trip was about more than just seeing a college,” said Roderick C. White, chapter Polemarch and Goldsboro City Councilman. “It was about planting seeds of ambition and showing these young leaders what’s possible when they pursue excellence.”
The collaboration between the two Greek organizations reflects their shared mission of supporting young people’s academic and personal development. Both the Kappa League and Alpha Kappa Alpha’s debutante program emphasize academic achievement, civic engagement, and character building.
Representatives from WSSU’s Gold-Wayne Alumni Chapter praised the visit’s impact. One member expressed hope that the event would become an annual tradition, noting the importance of such motivation in the community.
The Goldsboro Alumni Chapter plans additional youth programming and college readiness initiatives throughout the year. Information about upcoming events is available on the chapter’s website and social media channels.
