Steven Linwood Sasser

September 18, 2025, 71, Goldsboro —

Steven Linwood Sasser, 71, departed this life for his Heavenly home on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Steve lived a life of service and dedication to his community. He was a retired Lieutenant with the Goldsboro Fire Department and also served as a volunteer fireman with the Belfast Fire Department. Following his years in fire service, he continued serving others as a bus driver with Wayne County Public Schools in Rosewood. Steve also cherished his time as a member of the Goldsboro Elks Lodge and the Moose Lodge, where he built lifelong friendships and memories.

Steve had many passions that brought joy to his life. He loved photography and had a special eye for capturing meaningful moments. A collector at heart, he treasured anything Coca-Cola and had a lifelong fondness for Dalmatian dogs. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and he delighted in sharing his love for firetrucks, Coca-Cola, photography, and Dalmatians with them. Steve also found joy in cooking—especially desserts—and enjoyed treating his family to his recipes. When he wasn’t in the kitchen, he loved exploring new restaurants with his wife, often making special trips out of town just to try someplace new.

A service to celebrate Steve’s life will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 30, 2025 at Harvest Fellowship Church in Goldsboro with Pastor Pete Norris presiding. The family will greet friends following the service.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Rachel and Linwood Sasser, and his sister, Beverly. He is survived by his devoted wife, Betty Sasser; two bonus children, Wendy Kelly (Gary) of Goldsboro and Thomas Joseph “TJ” Underwood III (Sarah) of Goldsboro; four grandchildren, Stormy Hess (Daniel), Tyler Underwood, Sawyer Underwood, and Savannah Kelly (Tristan); and three great-grandchildren, Riley Smith, River Hess, and Jordan Hess. He is also survived by his nephews, Brian (Majena) and Eric (Jennifer), and great-nieces and nephews, Cody, Courtney, Taylor and Walker.

Steve wished to be remembered for his bravery, his love of firefighting, and the passion with which he served others.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his memory may be directed to Seymour Funeral Home to assist the family with funeral expenses.
