GOLDSBORO, N.C. — A 45-year-old woman in a wheelchair was killed Thursday morning when she and another wheelchair-bound pedestrian were struck by a vehicle on South John Street, according to the Goldsboro Police Department.
The fatal accident occurred at approximately 9:44 a.m. on South John Street. Officers from the Patrol Division responded to the scene where they found that a northbound vehicle had struck two pedestrians, both traveling in wheelchairs in the same direction.
Cheniko Pugh, 45, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second pedestrian, John Adams, 70, was transported to UNC Health Wayne for treatment. His current condition was not immediately available.
The driver, Vanessa Kearney, 50, was traveling north on John Street when the collision occurred. Police investigators determined that impairment was not a factor in the crash.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident remains ongoing. No charges have been announced at this time.
