CSS Returns to Serve Students with Expanded Programming and New Team Member

Wayne County educational support organization kicks off new school year with volunteer opportunities across nine local schools

WAYNE COUNTY, N.C. — As the new school year begins, Communities Supporting Schools (CSS) is once again mobilizing volunteers and staff to provide critical educational support services to students across Wayne County.

The organization operates comprehensive programs at nine schools, ranging from elementary reading support to high school graduation assistance. At the elementary level, CSS coordinates four reading programs where volunteers serve as “reading buddies,” working weekly with students to improve literacy skills and foster a love of reading.

“The beginning of the school year is always an exciting time at CSS,” the organization stated. “This amazing team is back to work, providing much needed services to our students.”

Elementary Reading Programs Seek Volunteers

CSS continues to seek volunteers for reading programs at four elementary schools: Brogden Primary, Carver Elementary, Carver Heights Elementary, and North Drive Elementary. These programs pair students with volunteer reading partners who help build both skills and enthusiasm for literacy.

Middle and High School Support

The organization’s middle school programs offer diverse support including tutoring, small group sessions, and mentoring at Brogden Middle, Dillard Middle, Grantham Middle, and Mount Olive Middle schools.

At the high school level, CSS focuses on graduation support and college and career planning at Southern Wayne High School and Spring Creek High School.

New Team Member Joins Organization

This year, CSS welcomes Velma Hartsfield to its team at North Drive Elementary. Hartsfield brings extensive experience as a retired elementary teacher with particular expertise in elementary reading instruction.

“The CSS team looks forward to working with her this year,” the organization noted.
