Historic Bridge on N.C. 561 to Be Replaced with $4.2 Million Project

NORTH CAROLINA — A 77-year-old bridge on N.C. 561 northwest of Red Oak will be replaced over the next two years as part of a $4.2 million infrastructure improvement project, the North Carolina Department of Transportation announced this week.

The bridge spanning Fishing Creek, originally constructed in 1947, has reached the end of its operational lifespan and will be demolished and rebuilt to meet current design standards. Wilson-based contractor S.T. Wooten Corporation was awarded the replacement contract and is expected to begin construction later this fall.

Located on the Nash-Halifax County line near the borders of Franklin and Warren counties, the bridge serves as a critical transportation link in the region. To minimize disruption to traffic flow during the lengthy construction process, crews will install a temporary bridge adjacent to the existing structure.

Drivers should follow all work zone signs and stay alert when crossing the temporary bridge,” transportation officials emphasized, noting the importance of exercising caution in the construction area.

The two-year timeline reflects the complexity of replacing aging infrastructure while maintaining traffic access. The new bridge will incorporate modern engineering standards and safety features, ensuring decades of reliable service for the communities it connects.

Construction is scheduled to commence in the coming months, with completion targeted for fall 2027. Motorists are advised to plan for potential delays and to remain vigilant when traveling through the work zone during the project’s duration.
