GOLDSBORO, N.C. – Wayne Community College has announced the recipients of its 22nd annual Distinguished Chair awards, recognizing two exceptional faculty members for their outstanding contributions to education and community service.
Award Recipients Excel in Teaching and Innovation
Language and Communication Department Chair Allyson Daly and Nursing Simulation Coordinator Bryan Johnson were selected for the prestigious awards, each receiving a trophy and monetary prize designated for professional development or travel expenses.
The Distinguished Chair awards honor full-time curriculum faculty members who have demonstrated exceptional performance both at the college and within the broader community. The recognition program is funded through an annual gift to the Foundation of WCC by an anonymous donor.
Daly Brings Global Perspective to Local Education
Daly, who previously taught in the public school system, has served WCC for more than a decade. In 2018, she established the college’s Scholars of Global Distinction program through a partnership with UNC World View, successfully integrating international perspectives into curriculum across multiple academic subjects.
“Her profound impact on students’ lives cannot be over-emphasized,” stated Daly’s award nominator, who described her as “a seasoned professional whose work reflects sustained excellence, a passionate mentor who transforms students’ lives, and a campus and community leader whose influence reaches across institutions and international borders.”
Johnson Pioneers Technology Integration in Nursing Education
Johnson, who has taught at WCC for six years, has revolutionized nursing education through his role as simulation coordinator. He developed comprehensive systems enabling students to practice nursing skills in realistic simulated environments and successfully incorporated virtual reality technology into the nursing curriculum.
“His forward-thinking approach to simulation and technology ensures our students graduate with skills reflective of modern healthcare practices,” his nominator noted.
Beyond the classroom, Johnson co-advises the college’s nursing student organization, creating opportunities for students to engage in meaningful community service projects.
“Bryan has been a dedicated and transformative member of the nursing faculty, consistently demonstrating excellence, innovation, and leadership in every role he has undertaken,” his nominator added.
Foundation Supports Educational Excellence
The Foundation of WCC, a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding community support for educational opportunities at the college, sponsors the Distinguished Chair awards program. The foundation also funds program and facility improvements, employee recognition initiatives, community cultural programs, and student scholarships.
The 2025 Distinguished Chair awards continue WCC’s tradition of recognizing faculty excellence and innovation in higher education, highlighting the college’s commitment to academic achievement and community engagement.
