GREENVILLE, N.C. — Greenville United Football Club will make club history this fall when it competes in the 2026 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup qualifying tournament for the first time since the organization’s founding in 2020.
The semi-professional soccer club, which serves as the region’s only team at its competitive level, will enter the Open Division Qualifying Rounds beginning in September. The Bucks will compete for one of just 16 remaining spots available in the 2026 U.S. Open Cup proper.
Historic Tournament Provides National Stage
Founded in 1914, the U.S. Open Cup stands as the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the United States and ranks among the longest-running tournaments worldwide. The tournament’s unique format brings together clubs from every tier of American soccer, creating the possibility for amateur and semi-professional teams to face Major League Soccer opponents in competitive matches.
“We are very excited about this new opportunity,” said Club President Michael McCarren. “This tournament is special because it gives Greenville United the chance to showcase our community on a national stage and face quality opponents from across the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic.”
Club’s Rapid Ascent Leads to National Recognition
Greenville United’s qualification for the prestigious tournament reflects the club’s swift development since its 2020 establishment. The organization has built its reputation through sustained community engagement, focused player development programs, and competitive achievements within the National Premier Soccer League.
Head Coach Aaron Okwei emphasized the significance of the opportunity for the eastern North Carolina region.
“It’s a huge achievement for Greenville United to be accepted into the U.S. Open Cup,” Okwei said. “This nationwide tournament brings together some of the best in U.S. Soccer, and it’s an incredible opportunity to represent eastern North Carolina on a national stage.”
Tournament Schedule and Format
The qualifying rounds will commence during the first match window scheduled for Saturday, September 13, and Sunday, September 14, 2025. Tournament organizers will determine Greenville United’s opponents through a regional draw system, with specific matchups to be announced in the coming weeks.
As a qualifying participant, Greenville United maintains eligibility to host matches during the qualifying rounds, potentially bringing high-level competitive soccer to local supporters.
