A Career Spanning Five Decades

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Rundgren began his musical journey as a teenager, founding the influential psychedelic group The Nazz in the 1960s. After leaving the band in 1969 to pursue a solo career, he released his debut album “Runt” and achieved breakthrough success with 1972’s “Something/Anything?,” on which he performed all instruments, vocals, and production duties.

The album’s success earned him recognition as “Rock’s New Wunderkind” and spawned classic hits including “I Saw The Light,” “Hello It’s Me,” and “Can We Still Be Friends.” His innovative approach continued with landmark albums such as “A Wizard, A True Star” and “The Hermit of Mink Hollow.”

Progressive Rock Pioneer and Technology Innovator

In 1974, Rundgren formed Todd Rundgren’s Utopia, later renamed Utopia, pioneering concepts in interactive musicianship and helping define both progressive rock and power pop genres. Notable Utopia releases included “Oops! Wrong Planet,” “Adventures in Utopia,” and “Oblivion.”

Beyond his performing career, Rundgren has produced albums for renowned artists including Patti Smith, Cheap Trick, Meat Loaf, XTC, and Hall & Oates. His multimedia innovations have consistently pushed technological boundaries, from the first interactive television concert in 1978 to launching PatroNet in 1998, the world’s first direct artist subscription service.

Recent Achievements and Recognition

Rundgren’s recent accomplishments include spearheading the “Clearly Human” virtual concert tour in 2021, featuring 25 geo-fenced live-streamed performances tailored to different U.S. cities. In 2017, he received honorary doctorates from both Berklee School of Music and DePauw University, recognizing his contributions to music and technology.

The artist continues to tour internationally with symphony orchestras and has been a member of Ringo Starr’s All-Starr Band since 1989.
