Delta Sigma Theta Chapter Leads Successful Campaign to Combat Period Poverty in Wayne County

GOLDSBORO, NC — A collaborative effort between the Goldsboro Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and several community organizations has successfully addressed period poverty in Wayne County, collecting thousands of feminine hygiene products through their 2025 United for Access campaign.

The three-month initiative, which concluded with a volunteer kit-building event in early August, demonstrates how community partnerships can tackle pressing social issues affecting women and girls across the region.

Campaign Results Exceed Expectations

The United for Access campaign, which ran from May through July 2025, culminated on August 2 with a large-scale assembly event where volunteers packaged 2,000 period kits for distribution. The community response exceeded organizers’ expectations, resulting in:

  • 24,488 donated feminine hygiene products collected
  • Nearly $2,000 in monetary contributions to sustain future efforts
  • 2,000 complete period kits assembled by volunteers

Each kit contains essential menstrual care items designed to support recipients’ dignity, health, and ability to participate fully in daily activities including school and work.

Addressing a Critical Need

The campaign directly addresses period poverty, a widespread issue where individuals cannot afford menstrual products or access them due to limited resources. This problem can force students to miss school and prevent women from participating in work and community activities.

“Access to menstrual products is a basic necessity, not a privilege,” said Dr. Yvette Smith, President of the Goldsboro Alumnae Chapter. “We are proud to work with Period Kits NC and our partners to meet this need for women and girls in Wayne County.”

Community Partnership Model

The initiative brought together multiple organizations to maximize impact:

  • Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Goldsboro Alumnae Chapter served as the lead organizer
  • Period Kits NC handled product distribution throughout the community
  • United Way of Wayne County provided partnership support
  • Goldsboro YMCA contributed to the collaborative effort
  • Wayne Uplift Resource Association assisted with community outreach

Alignment with National Priorities

The United for Access campaign reflects Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.’s national commitment to empowering women and girls. The organization has identified this demographic as a priority focus area, and the Goldsboro chapter’s efforts demonstrate how local chapters can address national priorities through community-specific initiatives.

The campaign also aims to reduce stigma surrounding menstruation while fostering healthier communities through improved access to necessary hygiene products.

Looking Forward

All collected products have been donated to Period Kits NC for strategic distribution to ensure they reach community members most in need. The monetary contributions will help sustain similar future initiatives.

The success of the 2025 campaign establishes a foundation for continued efforts to combat period poverty in Wayne County and serves as a model for other communities facing similar challenges.

Community Recognition

The Goldsboro Alumnae Chapter expressed gratitude to all partners and participants who contributed to the campaign’s success, including Period Kits NC, the United Way of Wayne County, the Goldsboro YMCA, Wayne Uplift Resource Association, individual donors, and volunteers who participated in the kit-building event.
