James G. Pope, 74, passed away on Monday, August 4, 2025 at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield. Born on April 8, 1951 in Johnston County, he was son to the late Ralph Pope and Doris Boswell Pope.
James spent his life working the land he loved, tending his fields with dedication and pride. Farming was not just his work — it was his way of life, and he found joy in each day spent outdoors. When he was not in the fields, James enjoyed watching baseball and football, always cheering for his favorite teams. He also had a deep appreciation for old western movies, which brought him a sense of comfort.
James will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his love for the simple things in life, and the steady, dependable presence he was to all who knew him.
James is survived by his daughter, Candace Monroe and husband, Nick; his grandchildren, Valerie and Jarrett Monroe; his brother, Jackie Pope and wife, Libby; his sister, Jean Pope; his niece, Catherine Pope and her daughter, Kaycee Roberson.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Denise Mae Crumpler Pope.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 7, 2025 from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Kenly Funeral Service. A service to honor James will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel with Pastor David Currie officiating. Burial will conclude at the Pope Family Cemetery.
