GOLDSBORO, N.C. — The Goldsboro Police Department is investigating what appears to be a domestic violence-related murder-suicide that claimed the lives of a married couple on July 21, 2025.
Initial Discovery Leads to Welfare Check
Officers with the Goldsboro Police Department responded to a welfare check request on Central Heights Road at approximately 5:20 p.m. on July 21. Upon arrival, officers working alongside Wayne County EMS personnel discovered an unresponsive woman inside the residence. EMS pronounced the victim deceased at the scene.
The victim has been identified as Gareshia Joyner, a 36-year-old Goldsboro resident.
Investigation Reveals Connection to Earlier Death
The Goldsboro Police Department’s Investigative Services Bureau and Crime Scene Unit immediately launched an investigation into Joyner’s death. During the course of their inquiry, investigators learned that Joyner’s husband, Kendrick Joyner, had been found dead earlier that same day by the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office from what was determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
This discovery of Kendrick Joyner’s death had prompted law enforcement to conduct the welfare check at the Goldsboro residence where his wife was subsequently found.
Autopsy Results Point to Homicide
An autopsy conducted by the medical examiner’s office determined that Gareshia Joyner died from a gunshot wound that was not self-inflicted. Based on the current evidence and established timeline of events, investigators believe this case represents domestic violence in which Kendrick Joyner fatally shot his wife before traveling to Pitt County, where he took his own life.

The Goldsboro Police Department continues to investigate the case.
