July 19, 2025, 80, Goldsboro —
Connie Coombs Mercer, 80, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 19, 2025, surrounded by the love and prayers of her family in the comfort of her home.
Born in Jones County on August 3, 1944, Connie was the daughter of the late Mark and Bernice Coombs. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 52 years, James Hunter Mercer, and her brother, Albert Coombs.
A faithful servant and loving soul, Connie dedicated many years of her life working as a bank teller with Branch Banking and Trust. Her warm smile and kind spirit made every customer feel valued and cared for. More than just a career, Connie’s work was an extension of her heart for people.
Connie’s greatest devotion, however, was to her Lord. A lifelong follower of Christ, she was a committed and active member of Pleasant Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church, where she faithfully served in many ministries. She found great joy in worshiping through music and used her God-given voice to glorify Him as a member of the church choir, the gospel group Servants Heart, and as a founding member of the Foundations Quartet. Her voice lifted many hearts and pointed countless souls toward heaven.
To her family, Connie was a steady light and a source of unconditional love. She leaves behind a legacy of faith, kindness, and a life well-lived in service to God and others.
Connie is survived by her children: son, Neil Mercer and wife, Melinda; daughters, Gina Strickland and Sheila Lewis and husband, Richard. She was a proud and loving grandmother to twelve grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her dear sister, Polly Eubanks, along with many extended family members and cherished friends.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Sheila and Richard Lewis. A graveside service celebrating Connie’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at Pikeville Cemetery.
