John Merritt Lear Peacock, 73, passed away on Saturday, July 12, 2025 at UNC Health Rex Hospital in Raleigh. Born in Orange County on November 6, 1951, he was the son of the late Robert Howell Peacock, III, and Robin Lear Peacock.

In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his sister, Anna Christy Peacock.

John is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Ellen Mulinix Shipman; children, Robin Dawson and husband, Michael Dawson, and Haley Dempsey and husband, Bryan; grandchildren, Aleeze and Merritt Dawson, Jack and Banks Dempsey; siblings, Robert Howell Peacock, IV, William Ellery Peacock and wife, Gregory Tyler; and Sarah Stansbury Peacock and husband, Thomas Clay; Ellen’s children, Benjamin Shipman, Carolyn Shipman and non-traditional partner, Eric William Klein, and Heather Fett; Ellen’s grandchildren, Dillon Snyder, Genevieve and Spencer Fett; and many nieces and nephews.

John was a 28-year veteran of Wurth Wood Group, where he worked as a salesman and built a career marked not only by professionalism and knowledge, but by genuine care for the people he served. To John, his customers were never just clients—they became a second family. He had a gift for connection, and it showed in the lasting relationships he built over the years.

John was known for his bright spirit and cheerful nature. He had a quick laugh, a kind word for everyone, and a way of making people feel at ease. Whether walking into a customer’s shop or chatting with a stranger, John had a remarkable way of turning everyday moments into something meaningful.

His love for nature and craftsmanship ran deep. As a young Boy Scout, he learned to respect the outdoors—to pay attention, to build with care, to move through the woods with a sense of wonder. That early training never left him. His passion for woodworking began not long after, and it remained a constant throughout his life. It wasn’t just a hobby—it was an extension of how he saw the world: thoughtfully, patiently, and with great attention to detail. Whether he was in his workshop shaping wood or out in the quiet of the morning watching birds—he was at peace in creation. His hands built beautiful things, always with care, reverence, and joy.

Above all, John loved his family deeply. He was a steady, loving presence who valued time together, big or small. His warmth, generosity, and laughter will be missed beyond measure, but his memory will live on in the countless lives he touched.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be sent to Green Acres, a local civic group in Goldsboro where John was a faithful member. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to SMOC for the compassionate care they provided to John, and to Green Acres, whose steadfast friendship and support meant the world to him.

A memorial service to celebrate John’s life will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. A private inurnment will be held at Willow Dale Cemetery.
