For Many, a First Public Salute: Purple Heart Veterans to Be Honored in Goldsboro

GOLDSBORO, N.C. – The Goldsboro/Wayne Purple Heart Foundation and the Wayne County Veterans and Patriots Coalition Inc. will host their 13th Annual Purple Heart Luncheon on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the Maxwell Convention Center, located at 3114 Wayne Memorial Drive.

The ceremony will honor Purple Heart recipients from the Goldsboro and Wayne County area, along with their guests, in recognition of their sacrifice and service to the nation.

Historic Military Honor

The Purple Heart decoration is awarded to service members who have been wounded or killed while serving with the U.S. Military. Originally established by George Washington in 1782 as the Badge of Military Merit, the Purple Heart carries the inscription: “Let it be known that he who wears the Military Order of the Purple Heart has given of his blood in the defense of his homeland and shall forever be revered by his fellow countrymen.”

First-Time Recognition for Many Veterans

For many veterans attending this year’s event, it will mark the first time they are publicly recognized for their military service and sacrifice. The ceremony will also provide an opportunity for family members to hear their loved ones’ combat stories, many for the first time.

Event Details and Registration

The luncheon will feature individual introductions of each Purple Heart recipient, including their military branch, years of service, and the location where they received their Purple Heart. Recipients will receive two complimentary banquet tickets for themselves and one guest.

The Goldsboro/Wayne Purple Heart Committee is actively seeking Purple Heart recipients in and around the area to register for the event.
