June 26, 2025, 63, Goldsboro —
Richard Avery Sasser, III, age 63, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at the Kitty Askins Hospice Center, surrounded by his loving family. Born on January 3, 1962, in Wayne County, he was the son of Harlene Aycock Sasser of Fremont and the late R.A. Sasser, Jr.
A proud graduate of East Carolina University, Richard spent most of his life dedicated to agriculture and the farming community. In addition to his work in farming, he also served others through his work as a crop insurance agent and income tax preparer.
Richard was deeply committed to his community and was a long-time member of the Nahunta Volunteer Fire Department, where he served both as a firefighter and later as a board member. He was also proud of his Southern heritage and held the position of treasurer for the Dr. B.T. Person Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
He had a great love for travel and was always on the hunt for a good meal—often journeying far and wide with friends simply to enjoy great food and fellowship. Richard’s good humor, storytelling, and easygoing spirit made him a joy to be around.
A graveside service celebrating Richard’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 30, 2025, at Wayne Memorial Park, with Rev. Steven Gay officiating. Following the service, the family will receive friends at the cemetery. In honor of Richard’s relaxed and down-to-earth style, the family invites those attending to dress comfortably—in t-shirts and shorts, just as Richard would have preferred.
In addition to his mother, Richard is survived by his devoted wife of 19 years, Dana Green Sasser; stepdaughters, C.J. Wilson and husband, Josh, and Brooke Jones and husband, Eric; brother, Rudy Sasser and wife, Joy; nephews, John Avery Sasser and Rudy Barden Sasser; granddaughter, Stella Rae Jones; and stepbrothers, David Sasser, Jr. and wife, Twilla, and David Brian Sasser and wife, Renee.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in Richard’s memory to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, NC 27534, or to the Nahunta Volunteer Fire Department, 383 Pike Cemetery Road, Pikeville, NC 27863.
Services are entrusted to Seymour Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
