June 20, 2025, 80, Goldsboro —
Walter Edward Radford, affectionately known as Ed, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 20, 2025, at the Kitty Askins Hospice Center. He was 80 years old.
Born in Wayne County on September 11, 1944, Ed was the son of the late Leslie Lawrence Radford and Pearl Hann Radford. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Lawrence Radford, Mack Radford, Raymond Radford, and Linwood Radford; and his sisters, Marie Taylor and Thelma McKeel.
Ed began his professional life at a young age. At just 16, he attended barber school and launched his first career as a barber, earning his certification in 1962. He proudly built and operated his own barbershop on Highway 581. Over time, his entrepreneurial spirit led him into the world of automobile sales, where his natural talent for business began to shine.
Never one to shy away from a new venture, Ed later founded a successful auto auction company. His passion for automobiles extended to motorsports, where he managed the Wilson County Racetrack before opening and operating the Wayne County Speedway. Whether behind the chair in his barbershop or on the track, Ed had a vision and the drive to bring it to life.
Above all, Ed treasured his family. He was a devoted husband, dad and PaPa. He never missed a race when Eddie was behind the wheel or a basketball game when Mark was on the court. His face would light up with joy in the company of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Known for his determination and knack for “wheeling and dealing,” Ed built a life and legacy on hard work, big dreams, and an unwavering commitment to those he loved. If Ed said he was going to do something—he did it.
Ed is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Gail Radford; sons, Eddie Radford and Mark Radford; granddaughter, Amber Radford; grandson, Edward Radford; and great-grandchildren, Brycen and Harmony. He is also survived by his sister, Evelyn Radford Lamm and husband, Gene; sisters-in-law, Jeanetta Radford, Kathleen Radford, and Anna Radford; along with many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 26, 2025, from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, followed by a service to celebrate Ed’s life at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel, with Rev. Jeff Sullivan and Steve Bishop officiating. Interment will take place on Friday, June 27, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. in the Radford Family Cemetery, near the family home. For those attending the services the family asks everyone to come Ed’s style, casual.
Arrangements are entrusted to Seymour Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
