CARY, N.C. – North Carolina Department of Labor Commissioner Luke Farley joined safety professionals, industry leaders, and local stakeholders in Cary for a Trench Safety Stand Down event, held in recognition of National Trench Safety Week. The event focused on increasing awareness of trenching and excavation hazards and promoting best practices to safeguard workers in the construction industry.
Organized in collaboration with local contractors and safety organizations, the event underscored the critical importance of trench safety protocols. Commissioner Farley addressed attendees with a clear message on the need for education, awareness, and vigilance in one of the construction industry’s most dangerous activities.
“Trenching and excavation are among the most hazardous activities in construction,” said Farley. “Events like this stand down are critical in reminding employers and workers of the life-saving value of following safety protocols.”
Sullivan Eastern, a leading contractor in the region, was among the featured presenters. The company shared expert insights on trench safety procedures, equipment best practices, and real-world approaches to minimizing risks in the field.
The event also received generous support from community sponsors:
- WM Jordan provided lunch for all participants,
- MACK contributed raffle prizes,
- James River Equipment offered additional resources and support for attendees.
The Trench Safety Stand Down is part of the North Carolina Department of Labor’s broader initiative to reduce injuries and fatalities in high-risk industries through education, collaboration, and advocacy. Events like this align with the goals of Trench Safety Week, a national campaign that encourages employers to temporarily halt work to engage in targeted safety talks, demonstrations, and hands-on training focused on trenching hazards.
The NCDOL expressed appreciation for the commitment shown by the construction and safety community in supporting a culture of prevention and accountability in the workplace.
