Wind Advisory: Eastern NC Sees Gusts Up to 25 MPH

Eastern, N.C. – North Carolinians should prepare for noticeably breezy conditions on Tuesday as a weather system moves through the region, bringing elevated wind speeds across much of the state.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service report that wind gusts of 20 to 25 miles per hour will be possible across eastern North Carolina, even in areas that do not experience thunderstorms. These gusts may be strong enough to make driving more difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles such as trucks and vans, and could blow around unsecured outdoor items like trash bins, patio furniture, or lawn decorations.

Further inland, areas across central and western North Carolina can expect lighter but still breezy conditions, with gusts reaching up to 15 to 20 miles per hour throughout the day.

What’s Causing the Wind?

The gusty conditions are being driven by a tightening pressure gradient between a departing low-pressure system to the north and high pressure building in behind it. This setup increases wind speeds at the surface and could also enhance thunderstorm development in some areas.

Safety and Travel Tips

  • Secure outdoor items: Tie down or bring in lightweight objects that could blow away or cause damage.
  • Drive with caution: Keep both hands on the wheel and watch for sudden gusts, especially on open roads and bridges.
  • Boaters beware: Choppy waters and unpredictable wind shifts may make for hazardous conditions on lakes and coastal waters.

While the winds are not expected to reach damaging levels, they can still cause minor inconveniences and localized disruptions, particularly in open or elevated areas.

Thunderstorms, where they develop, could bring even stronger gusts, so residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware and keep an eye on local forecasts and alerts throughout the day.
