Travel Smarter This Summer: NCDOT Highlights Ferry Schedules, Road Conditions, and Rail Discounts

Raleigh, N.C. — With the summer season in full swing, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is urging travelers to stay informed and prepared as several key developments impact transportation across the state.

The following are highlights from this week’s NCDOT announcements, also featured in the department’s weekly video newscast, NCDOT Now.

Summer Travel Season Begins with Increased Traffic and Delays

NCDOT is advising drivers to plan for heavier traffic volumes and possible delays as summer travel ramps up statewide.

Particular caution is advised for motorists traveling through Western North Carolina, where Hurricane Helene recovery is ongoing. Travelers on Interstate 40 in the Pigeon River Gorge should be aware that only one lane remains open in each direction, which may contribute to extended travel times.

To stay updated, NCDOT encourages checking DriveNC.gov for live traffic conditions and construction alerts before heading out.

Summer Ferry Schedules Now in Effect

The N.C. Ferry System has released its summer schedules for routes crossing the Pamlico Sound, with expanded service to support seasonal demand.

The Swan Quarter–Ocracoke and Cedar Island–Ocracoke routes will each feature an additional daily round trip, making island access easier for residents and tourists alike.

Ferry reservations are strongly encouraged and can be made at ncferry.org or by calling 1-800-BY-FERRY. For real-time ferry updates, visit ncdot.gov/fins.

DMV Welcomes 80 New Driver License Examiners

In a move to enhance customer service, the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles celebrated the graduation of 80 new driver license examiners during a ceremony in Raleigh last week.

After five weeks of training, the newly certified examiners are now assigned to 51 DMV offices across the state. Their deployment is expected to improve service wait times and appointment availability.

NC By Train Celebrates Over 30 Years of Passenger Service

NC By Train is marking over three decades of connecting North Carolinians through reliable rail service.

To celebrate the milestone, officials gathered at Raleigh Union Station to unveil a commemorative locomotive and announce a special fare promotion. Travelers who book tickets on the Piedmont or Carolinian lines by June 16 will receive 30% off travel within North Carolina through the end of the month.
