Pikeville, N.C. — A routine traffic stop in the early morning hours of June 4 led Pikeville Police to arrest a man wanted for attempted murder and uncover multiple illegal firearms, including a weapon of mass destruction. Two additional suspects were also charged following the incident.
Around 1:10 a.m., Pikeville Police officers initiated a traffic stop for a registration violation. During the stop, one of the vehicle’s occupants fled on foot, prompting a brief pursuit. Officers quickly apprehended the fleeing suspect, later identified as 24-year-old Layfield Raymone Jose Smith, who was wanted on two outstanding warrants for attempted murder stemming from a recent shooting in Goldsboro.
A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered multiple loaded firearms, one classified as a weapon of mass destruction. Officers also discovered ski masks and latex gloves inside the vehicle—items police say indicate an intent to avoid identification and possibly commit further criminal activity.
Two other individuals in the vehicle were identified and charged. Isaiah Devonn Cox, 25, was charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction and is being held on a $25,000 secured bond. Tabias Maki Cox, 20, was cited and released on charges of carrying a concealed gun and possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance.
All three men now face a range of felony and misdemeanor charges, including firearm violations and obstruction.
Pikeville Police Chief Rodney Jarman commended the officers’ alertness and response.
“This incident is a powerful example of how proactive enforcement and the keen instincts of our patrol officers directly contribute to the safety of our community,” Chief Jarman said. “What began as a traffic stop resulted in the capture of a violent fugitive and the prevention of likely imminent criminal activity.”
The department is working with agencies in surrounding jurisdictions to determine whether the suspects are connected to other crimes in the region.
