Rocky Mount, N.C. – The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) is warning residents to be on high alert for a wave of fraudulent text message scams falsely posing as official communications from the agency.
According to the NCDMV, scammers are sending out texts that claim to demand payment for fees, fines, or tolls. These messages may appear legitimate but are not associated with the NCDMV.
“The NCDMV will never request payments via text message,” the agency emphasized in a public advisory issued this week.
Officials urge recipients of these suspicious texts to take immediate precautions:
- Do not click on any links.
- Do not share personal or financial information.
- Report the message as spam and delete it immediately.
How to Stay Safe:
- Be wary of any unsolicited texts asking for payment or personal data.
- Verify any communication claiming to be from NCDMV through its official website or customer service channels.
- Report scam messages to your mobile carrier or file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov/complaint.
