Goldsboro, N.C. — A group of young scientists from Dillard Academy Charter School has achieved something remarkable: the 5th-grade class authored and published a science book titled Cell-ebrate Science: Wonder of the Human Body, showcasing their knowledge of human biology and their creativity in the classroom.
In a celebratory event filled with joy, pride, and emotion, each student was honored with a commemorative medallion, a personal copy of the book, and their very own desktop computer donated by the Kramden Institute.
The event included heartfelt speeches from school leaders, community members, and local dignitaries. Yolanda Farmer, addressing the crowd, captured the spirit of the occasion:
“Today we gather not just for a celebration, but for a moment of purpose and pride—to honor the brilliance of these 5th graders. They’ve researched, written, and published their own science book. This is their red carpet moment.”
Mayor Charles Gaylor of Goldsboro praised the students’ achievement and spoke directly to the children and their families:
“Are you proud of yourselves? I want you to know that I am. We as a city are proud of you. You are the future of Goldsboro.”
The event was also a tribute to the school’s late founder, Ms. Hilda Hicks, who passed away on June 10, 2024. Her legacy was honored with a special moment of remembrance. A trailblazer in education, Ms. Hicks opened Dillard Academy in 1998, after a distinguished career with the Social Security Administration and work in community job training programs.
“Her spirit lives in every success, every story, and every page of tonight’s celebration,” Farmer said. “We honor her and continue the work she began.”
During the evening, students were invited one by one to share what they love most about their school. Their reflections were moving:
“This school helps me find my voice… They don’t just teach us, they love us… I used to hate school—now I wake up excited to come here.”
In an impressive show of community spirit and gratitude, the 5th-grade class presented a donation of $1,500 back to the school—funds left over after the publication of their book.
Co Principals Tasha Adams, and John Twitty were recognized and joined in receiving the donation alongside the students. The event concluded with the distribution of the students’ books, seeing them for the first time in person, book signing by dignitaries, and the children taking home their own computer desktop donated by Kramden Institute.
The book, Cell-ebrate Science, reflects not only a study of biology but also a celebration of perseverance, creativity, and community with the Dillard Academy 5th Grade Science Team—a fitting tribute to Dillard Academy’s 25-year legacy of educational excellence and heart.
