Goldsboro, N.C. — On May 19, The City of Goldsboro has officially recognized the enduring legacy and educational contributions of Dillard/Goldsboro Alumni & Friends, Inc. with a formal proclamation, presented just days ahead of the organization’s highly anticipated 70th annual homecoming celebration.
The proclamation, issued by the Goldsboro City Council on May 19, 2025, commends the nonprofit organization for its unwavering commitment to preserving the history of Dillard High School and Goldsboro High School, both of which have played vital roles in the city’s African American educational history.
Founded in 1866 as a private institution for Black students, Dillard High School became a cornerstone of education and empowerment for generations. Today, that legacy is carried forward by Dillard/Goldsboro Alumni & Friends, Inc., which also focuses on providing scholarships and educational opportunities for students in the community.
70 Years of Celebration and Giving
The organization will mark its milestone 70th Homecoming Weekend from Thursday, May 22, through Sunday, May 25, 2025, bringing together alumni, families, and supporters for a series of events celebrating the schools’ shared heritage and the community’s future.
Accepting the proclamation on behalf of the organization was Mr. Ernest “Mutt” Lofton, a proud member of the Dillard High School Class of 1954. Lofton expressed deep gratitude for the recognition and highlighted the organization’s enduring mission.
“Our main goal is scholarships,” Lofton said. “The goal is to reach a million dollars in scholarship money. That’s a lot of money in scholarships—and we are still giving them out. I want to thank the board of the City Council and the City of Goldsboro. We support, and we hope to continue giving support.”
Investing in the Future
The National Scholarship Committee of Dillard/Goldsboro Alumni & Friends, Inc. oversees the scholarship selection process, ensuring that deserving high school students receive the financial support needed to pursue higher education and realize their full potential.
The City Council’s proclamation urges all residents to join in celebrating Memorial Day Weekend 2025 alongside the alumni community, and to continue supporting the organization’s efforts to uplift the next generation of leaders through education.
As the 70th homecoming draws near, the spirit of tradition, service, and progress remains strong—a reflection of the values instilled at Dillard and Goldsboro High Schools and carried forward by their proud alumni.
