Doris Jean Curl (nee Daniel), was born on January 5, 1931, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Kathryn “Kitty” Elaine (nee Sweeney), and Loren Arthur “Art” Daniel. She was the only child of the couple and was the apple of her father’s eye. Growing-up, Doris was active in her church’s junior choir and then the senior choir. Doris spent much of her youth along the tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay with her family and later in life as a grown woman. She was an avid swimmer and loved outdoor activities for most of her life. Doris also loved the arts and developed a great love for music as a child and learned to play the piano on her treasured baby grand piano. Doris had a great love for animals of all shapes and sizes which she instilled later in life in her children. On June 2, 1951, Doris left her neighborhood church as the wife of John Edward Curl, Jr. Within the year the couple welcomed their first child, John E., III. In time the couple became a family of three with the addition of another son, Robert A., and a daughter, Debra J. The Curl family was complete.
In New Jersey, Doris was involved in various civic organizations and served her community. She was a Den Mother in the Boy Scouts and held several offices in her local chapter of the Lioness Clubs International. In 1990, she and her husband retired to Goldsboro, North Carolina, and she soon found herself serving her community, again. Doris became involved in the local chapter of Lions Clubs International Auxiliary where she held several offices over the years. In her spare time, Doris enjoyed researching her family genealogy, gardening in her yard, taking trips to the coast, and watching NASCAR races with her husband.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, John “Jack” E. Curl, Jr., her mother, Kathryn “Kitty” E. and her father, Loren Arthur “Art” Daniel. Doris is survived by her sons, John E., III (Teresa), and Robert A. (Alice), and her daughter, Debra J.; her grandchildren, Daniel J. (Kara-Anne), Matthew R., Ian M., Justin T. (Daniela), Casey A. (Jeromy), Elizabeth A., Sean P. (Alisha); and her great-grandchildren, Hunter B., Callen L., Jack P., Charlie W., Colton P., Benjamin D., and Rosalie S; her beloved cousins, Peter D. Sauerbrey (Catherine), her beloved cat, Henri Cocoa “Koki” Fellini, a slew of adoptive daughters and sons, and many loving friends. Her family and friends will hold fast to the memories of times spent laughing and cajoling with Doris.
A Celebration of Life for family and friends will take place at a later date. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please make donations to an Outer Banks Non-Profit Organization or the Audubon Society.
