National Weather Service Issues Flood Watch for Wayne County Through Tuesday Morning

Wayne County, N.C. – The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Flood Watch for Wayne County, effective from 4:30 a.m. Monday and remaining in effect through Tuesday morning. Forecasters are warning residents to prepare for the possibility of flash flooding as a slow-moving weather system brings rounds of heavy rain to eastern North Carolina.

Elevated Flood Risk Due to Saturated Ground and Ongoing Rainfall

The Flood Watch comes amid already wet conditions across the region. Several inches of rain have fallen in recent days, saturating the ground and elevating water levels in local rivers, streams, and drainage areas. The NWS predicts that an additional 1 to 3 inches of rain could fall in some areas by Tuesday morning, with locally higher amounts possible in areas that experience repeated downpours or thunderstorms.

“Given how saturated the soil already is, it won’t take much additional rain to cause problems,” said a spokesperson from the NWS Raleigh office. “We’re urging residents in flood-prone areas to remain alert and take precautions.”

Areas of Concern and Safety Precautions

Flooding is most likely to occur in low-lying and poorly drained areas, including rural roads, underpasses, and urban neighborhoods where storm drains may become overwhelmed. Flash flooding can occur with little warning, and officials are stressing the importance of never driving through flooded roadways, as even a small amount of water can sweep away a vehicle.

Local emergency management teams are monitoring conditions closely. Sandbags have been made available in some municipalities, and road crews are on standby in the event of rising waters or debris-blocked culverts.

Public Urged to Stay Informed and Be Prepared

Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official weather alerts, local news, and mobile weather apps. The ReadyNC app and NOAA Weather Radio provide timely updates and emergency notifications.

Those living in flood-prone areas should take steps to prepare, including:

  • Moving vehicles to higher ground
  • Securing outdoor furniture and loose items
  • Checking sump pumps and drainage systems
  • Having an emergency kit ready with essentials

Schools and government offices are expected to remain open, but any changes to schedules or closures will be communicated through official channels if conditions worsen overnight.

Looking Ahead

The weather system responsible for the rain is expected to move out of the region by late Tuesday, bringing drier conditions midweek. However, lingering moisture may keep river levels elevated for several days, so continued caution is advised.
