Wayne County Urges Residents to Prepare for Hurricane Season Ahead of June 1 Start

Wayne County, N.C. — With hurricane season officially beginning on June 1, Wayne County Emergency Management is urging residents to take action now by updating emergency plans and restocking supply kits.

The Atlantic hurricane season, which runs through November 30, brings with it the potential for powerful storms and hazardous conditions. To raise awareness and promote readiness, the National Weather Service has designated May 4–10 as Hurricane Preparedness Week across North Carolina.

Wayne County has been no stranger to hurricanes in recent decades, experiencing widespread damage and devastating flooding from storms such as Fran, Floyd, Matthew, and Florence.

“Having an emergency plan and a well-stocked supply kit is one of the most important steps families can take to protect themselves,” said Gary Tillman, Emergency Management Coordinator for Wayne County. “Every household should be prepared to meet basic needs for at least three to seven days. If an evacuation is ordered, it’s critical to leave promptly—not only for your safety but also to avoid putting first responders at risk.”

Residents are encouraged to visit www.ReadyNC.gov to create or update their emergency plans using downloadable templates and checklists. Important documents such as insurance policies, IDs, and medical records should be stored in waterproof, fireproof containers or backed up digitally.

Preparedness also includes ensuring your insurance coverage is up-to-date and includes flood protection, which is typically not covered by standard homeowners’ or renters’ policies.

An emergency supply kit should contain:

  • Non-perishable food and water (enough for 3–7 days)
  • First-aid kit
  • Battery-powered weather radio with extra batteries
  • Prescription medications
  • Warm blankets or sleeping bags
  • Extra clothing and hygiene supplies
  • Cash in small denominations
  • Pet supplies, including food, water, leash, and vaccination records

In addition to planning, residents are urged to take preventive actions at home, such as trimming trees, securing outdoor furniture, covering windows, and clearing gutters to reduce potential storm damage.
