Charlie Harris “Chuck” Smithwick, III, passed away on Saturday, May 3, 2025 at his home. Chuck was born in Bertie County, North Carolina to Nancy Kellum Rizzo and the late Charlie Harris Smithwick, Jr. on July 3, 1961. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Margaret Smithwick; and his right-hand canine companion, Dakota.
As a man who found much joy under open skies, Chuck’s lifelong profession as a roofer was a perfect fit for him. With an easygoing personality, Chuck lived a life rooted in simplicity, hard work, and the beauty of nature. When not working, he loved firing up the grill, spending time on the water fishing, or deep in the woods hunting and trapping.
A memorial service to honor Chuck’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, 2025 at Rouse Funeral Home.
In addition to his mother, Chuck is survived by his wife of twenty-two years, Barbara Smithwick; daughter, Keisha Lowery Lane and her husband, J.T., along with children, Julian Lowery, Lavette Cooper, and Brooks Lane; son, John Gibson and his wife, Terry, and children; sister, Portia Jennison and husband, Bill and their children; stepsisters, Janet F. Cooper and husband, Tim and Jackie Fuqua; and his devoted fur babies, Bella, Junior, Little Bit, and Stumpy.
