October 2, 2024, 80, Goldsboro —

William “Bill” Duffy Lane, owner and operator of Lane Tree Golf Club and Conference Center and well-known developer in Wayne County, departed this walk of life Wednesday afternoon, October 2nd at his home surrounded by his family.

The family will greet friends on Monday, October 7, 2024, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Lane Tree Golf Club and Conference Center, 2317 Salem Church Road in Goldsboro. A graveside service to honor and celebrate his life will be held Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at 3 p.m. beside Number 11 Tee Box at Lane Tree Golf Course, which was Bill’s request.

Bill as he was known, was a native of Wayne County born on February 26, 1944, to Duffy and Rovene Parker Lane. Bill was the owner and operator of Lane Tree Golf Course and Conference Center and was a developer of 62 subdivisions in Wayne County. Bill was always an avid worker, his proprietorships included sand pits, hunting clubs, solar farms, cotton gins, and the John Deere dealership in Goldsboro. Bill was a member of the Board of Transportation (DOT) and past volunteered with the Belfast Fire Department. His loyalty, friendship, and dedication in making Wayne County a better place to live will leave a deep void for all those who knew and loved him, but his legacy will continue to live on.

He is survived by his three sons, Duff Lane of Goldsboro, Todd Lane of Goldsboro, and Keith Lane (Lisa) of Goldsboro; daughter-in-law, Pauline Lane, and mother of his children, Donna Merritt; one daughter, Morgan Shoemaker (Brett) of Roanoke, VA; five grandchildren, Trey Lane (fiancée, Kaelyn Mohrfeld), Little Todd Lane, Nikki Lane, Penn Lane, and Addison Lane; one great-grandson, Will Lane; five step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren and all his many friends, employees and caregivers, Doris Webster, Ray Alawar and special thanks to Eric Hammons, Kay Bailey, Juli Williams and Brandy Smith.
