July 4, 2023, 84, Goldsboro –
August 3, 1938 – July 4, 2023
Warren Schappell passed away on July 4, 2023, at UNC Wayne. He gained his independence from the cares of this world to find rest and peace. Warren was born in Lenhartsville, PA on August 3, 1938, to the late Walter Schappell and Elda Kerchner Schappell.
Warren was dedicated to the United States Air Force from his early years. He knew he wanted to serve his country and loved aviation. He found his place in the Air Force, serving for 28 years in the Non-destructive inspection shop and earning the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. Warren did not stop working at retirement from the service. He worked in the NDI shop for another 21 years as a civilian. His career spanned five continents and five decades. He traveled to so many beautiful destinations and ended up meeting and marrying his Canadian sweetheart in 1960, Sheila Smith.
Warren and Sheila raised a family and found enjoyment in their retirement years cruising and seeing parts of the world they had not seen in their military travels. They had a special bond that allowed them to endure whatever came their way. While their children brought them joy, there was something extra special about their grandchildren. Warren loved being a grandpa and treasured the moments he spent with them.
When Warren wasn’t working, traveling, or spending time with family, he could be seen making sure his lawn was pristine, nothing out of place. He looked forward to his vibrant red roses blooming each year and made sure they had all the care they needed. He also had a passion for tinkering with old cars, especially his prized 1963 Chevy Impala.
Warren and Sheila worshiped the Lord and were members of Daniels Memorial Church. Once COVID hit, they were unable to attend but enjoyed watching their favorite speakers on television. Warren was also a proud member of the Masonic Lodge, beginning in the early 1960s.
A Service of Love and Remembrance will be held privately.
Warren is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sheila Smith Schappell; daughter, Deborah Lynn Schappell; sons, Ronald Warren Schappell (Leslie) and Steven Michael Schappell (Dawn); grandchildren, Brendan, Aidan, Hunter (Emily), Graysen, Elizabeth, and Stephanie; siblings, Pauline Rollman, Arlene Kline, Gerald Schappell, Marie Sholl, Karen Hoffman, and Larry Reichart. In addition to his parents, Warren was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Dunkel.
